A typical small to medium sized website should begin to do measurable business in about three months from preparation. Traffic will build up for at least two years at which point it may level off or even begin to fall slightly. Within the first year it should be turning over more than it cost to produce and maintain. Whether or not it makes a profit depends on margins and pricing structure.

Over 90% of all www sites fail to meet this standard. There are many possible causes. Common ones include:

• unsuitable content
• designs that do not suit the nature of the www
• failure to maintain and promote the site
• overuse of distracting gimmickry
